The answer is yes. Clippers can get too hot. Here is why clippers get hot. Clipper progress is like any other technology. It has got better. Clippers are faster now.

Clipper motors of the past ran on a 2000 strokes per minute rotation. New and improved professional grade clippers now run at 4000 strokes per rotation. Clipper blades need to be lubricated with oil regularly.

The main reason the blades produce more heat is because they dry out with the increased friction.

There are three types of motor design for hair clippers. There is Rotary, Magnet and Pivot.

They each have there advantages and disadvantages. They vary in variable speeds, torque and friction heat. Here is a chart explaining some of the differences.

  • ROTARY- Circular motion to linear. (CAM). Rechargeable battery, very simple and cheap. Variable speed.
  • MAGNET MOTOR- Fastest clipper in the market, (Barber Workhorse). 60HZ A.C. Power, Spring Push Action, 120HZ-Blade Speed. 120HZ*60s=7200 RPM. Spring-Push Action results in Low Torque. High speed results in high heat.
  • PIVOT MOTOR- Magnetic Pull Action, (Blades sideways) 60HZ*60s=3600 RPM. High Torque, Low Blade Speed, Low Friction Heat.
